Who we are

WTF is BREAK FREE?

Running gear that is bigger than just running - we strive to merge running clothes with the true mental effect we get from running, and embrace the idea that meaningful designs can inspire and support people on their running journey

Our motto “limits are meant to be broken” exemplifies our belief that the clothes we wear can remind us that we are capable of so much more than we may think.

That’s why we run really, every single day… to exercise our free will in choosing to do something tough to better ourselves. That’s why it’s not a “club”, it’s a cult. Its for those that know if they run into the fire they’ll come out a different person.

OUR ORIGIN STORY

Hey, I’m Evan, the founder of Break Free

Thanks for taking the time to get to know us, it really means more than you know.

The origin story dates back many years ago…

When I was 14, I started running cross country in high school, because my parents wanted me to do a sport, and my older sister was already on the team. I was no runner.

I was horribly out of shape and one of the slowest kids on the team when I started. But in that first season I went from not being able to run a mile, to running an entire 3 mile cross country race.

The thrill of improving myself was unlike anything I’d experienced, and I was hooked.

I continued running on the team at a recreational level, until I realized in my senior year of high school that If I got good enough, I could get a scholarship to get into my dream college.

That whole summer I took running extremely seriously. I lost 30 pounds. I bought and read books on proper running training. I was running 15 mile long runs alone on the weekend. I was so ready for the season to begin.

There was a distinct moment when I told my (far faster) friends, that I wanted to make the top 7 runners on our team to travel to our first invitational meet. They scoffed and thought I was being cocky and unrealistic.

I was so hurt by that. My very best friends couldn’t see my vision the same way I did.

Luckily my parents supported me, and so I still trained as hard as I could to get myself on that team. I knew that:

“Limits are meant to be broken”

And I broke them. I made it on the team, became one of our top runners, and eventually got to run at the collegiate level. I had broken free of their limits.

Those experiences snowballed into the rest of my life, in my work, my relationships, and my health and fitness. I now could see false barriers where other people would stop wanting and stop working because they believed going further simply wasn’t possible.

It’s these limiting mindsets that squash human potential everywhere, all over the world, not just in running.

I think sometimes what if I wasn’t lucky enough to have my parents to support me. Would I have tried as hard? I may not have ever discovered the potential that rested inside of me. I’m sure that my life would look much different, and probably for the worse.

This is where the idea of Break Free started.

This brand was started as a passion project of mine to not just sell clothes but to be that person to remind anyone running that:

“Limits are meant to be broken”

Even though I no longer run competitively now, I still turn to running to remind myself that I can do so much more than what I might think. I can push back against the limits, the glass ceilings, and the negative judgement anywhere in my life.

I chose apparel as the medium to share this message so even when you run you can have this image on your gear, and hopefully spread the message by being a part of the cult.

Also, this is why we’re not a “club”. We’re a cult. Not in a weird woo-woo way, but in the way that we're built around a core idea. We're built around the idea of breaking through our limits in fitness, in attitude, and in life. It's more than just a running club.

Each design is inspired by the words and phrases that have motivated me to pursue a higher form of myself… and of course, each piece is crafted with ultimate care and premium quality.

Thanks for being part of our journey, we couldn’t be who we are without you.
